How to Protect Your Pipes from Freezing During a Minneapolis Cold Snap

Living in Minneapolis means we know how to handle the cold. We have our heavy coats, our snow tires, and our emergency kits. But while we're bundled up, our homes—specifically our plumbing—are often left vulnerable to the plummeting temperatures.

A frozen pipe isn't just an inconvenience; it’s a ticking time bomb. When water freezes, it expands with tremendous force, often enough to crack copper or PVC piping. Once that ice thaws, you’re left with a burst pipe, severe water damage, and a repair bill that no one wants to see.

As your local plumbing experts at MH Plumbing, we want to help you avoid that disaster. Here are three simple, effective steps every Minneapolis homeowner should take when the forecast drops below freezing.

1. Keep the Water Moving

Running water is much harder to freeze than standing water. When the temperature dips into the single digits (or lower), go to the faucet that is furthest from your main water shut-off valve. Turn it on just enough so that it drips—a slow, steady trickle is all you need.

It might feel wasteful, but that tiny amount of water movement relieves pressure in the system and can be the difference between a safe night and a flooded basement.

2. Open Your Cabinet Doors

Many of your most vulnerable pipes are hiding under your kitchen and bathroom sinks, often against cold exterior walls. By simply opening the cabinet doors, you allow the warmer air from your home to circulate around the plumbing.

This is especially important if you have sinks on an outside wall. Don’t worry about the mess inside the cabinets; keeping those pipes warm is the priority!

3. Seal the Gaps

Cold air drafts are a pipe’s worst enemy. Check around your home for any cracks or holes where cold air might be hitting your plumbing directly—common spots include where cable lines or dryer vents enter the house. A little bit of caulk or spray foam insulation can go a long way in keeping that frigid Minneapolis air out.

Also, don't forget your garden hoses! Disconnect them, drain them, and shut off the water to your exterior spigots if you haven’t already.

What to Do If You Suspect a Frozen Pipe

If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, or if you see frost on a visible pipe, you may already have a freeze.

  • Don't Wait: Call a professional immediately. The sooner we can safely thaw the pipe, the lower the risk of it bursting.

  • Shut It Off: Know where your main water shut-off valve is (usually in the basement) and turn it off to prevent flooding if the pipe has already cracked.

  • Never Use Open Flame: Do not try to thaw a pipe with a blowtorch or open flame. This is a major fire hazard. A hair dryer or space heater is a safer option while you wait for help.

Stay warm, Minneapolis! And remember, if you need us, MH Plumbing is just a phone call away.
